Help Us Inspire Students Through Travel

A Story From Monica D, Summer 2010 Alumnus

My name is Monica Duque and in the summer of 2010,  I was given the opportunity to travel the West Coast. Since the time I moved to New York from Ecuador in 2003, I never left anywhere to travel. My dad could not afford to pay for me to travel or take me anywhere at a young age because he did not have a well-paid job. One of my dreams growing up was always to experience the world, travel, and to get the chance to meet new people.

Trip of a Lifetime gave that to me. I got the chance to go on a teen tour with 40 kids who I had never met before; we traveled to the West Coast (California, South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and Nevada). I never would have thought that I would have the chance to experience this until I had my own home and job.

Throughout this trip I gained a family; the counselors on board, the bus driver, and my 40 new friends. We drove to every single destination, spending hours on the bus, singing to the Backstreet Boys “I want it that way”, playing games, and making up saying for every stop we made. All the memories I made during this journey was because of the great people who were surrounding me, they taught me that you couldn’t judge a book by its cover, and not every kids was the same. This experience changed my life.

After my trip ended, I realized that I wanted to give back to my community and help those who are less fortunate when I graduated college. My goal in life now is to encourage students to take the opportunities that are given to them because great things come out of it. I was lucky enough to have a principal who knew me well and wanted the best for me. Mr. Barbosa pushed me to always take every opportunity because he didn’t want me to miss something great. He knew that I would learn from it and to always try. He was the one who the one who encouraged me to apply for Trip of a Lifetime because he knew there will never be another opportunity like this.

I encourage you to make a donation to make sure that every student like me gets this opportunity. It’s a life changing experiencing and to this day this is one of my most enjoyable journeys.
